A British diplomat has saved a student who was floating face down in a river near Chongqing in south-west China. 61-year-old Stephen Ellison, who is only a month into his new post as consul general, jumped in after the 24-year-old woman slipped on rocks and fell.

  1. Not surprising that it was the Brit to jump in and do what was needed.

    One time I was walking along a bridge high over a river in Tokyo. On the other side of the bridge, across two lanes of traffic, I saw an old man in hospital whites preparing to jump into the river. I ran across the road, grabbed him and stopped him from jumping. Other people just walked by, like ‘nothing to see here’. I started shouting at them to help. Was kind of telling…
